In Sardinia, the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, an ancient tradition persists—a remembrance of Dionysus, the God of ecstasy and ritual madness. Originally a pastoral rite passed down through generations of shepherds, it has evolved into a vibrant carnival celebrating themes of death, rebirth, and fertility.
During this carnival, Dionysus takes form in the zoomorphic mask of “S’Urtzu,” adorned with an entire goat skin, complete with its head. The Mamutzones wear masks representing the followers of Dionysus. In the triptych “Passages”, three figures engage in a mesmerizing dance of sound and movement, veering toward abstraction. Gradually, the performers’ bodies dissolve into a fluid cloud of pure motion, akin to spectral echoes from a distant era. This dance—bridging the figurative and the ethereal, the corporeal and the animal—serves as a metaphor for the ritualistic transformation and interconnectedness of the human condition, transcending borders and cultures.
